In today’s science lesson, our Year 1 children dived into the fascinating world of fish! We began by looking at pictures and videos of different types of fish, from tiny goldfish to enormous sharks, and talked about where they live and how they move.

We learned that fish are animals that live in water and have some special features that help them survive:

• Fins – to help them swim
• Gills – to help them breathe underwater
• Scales – to protect their bodies
• Tails – to help them steer and move quickly

The children were brilliant at spotting these features and even had a go at drawing their own fish, labelling each part. We also sorted animals into groups to see which ones were fish and which were not, using what we had learned to explain our choices.

To finish, we talked about how fish are different from other animals like birds or mammals, and the children asked some fantastic questions — including “Do all fish lay eggs?” and “Can fish hear?”

It was a fun, hands-on lesson full of curiosity and discovery. We’re so proud of how engaged and thoughtful the children were — future marine biologists in the making!
