Humphrey, the labradoodle, is a new and long-awaited addition to our school community!

Learning to care for animals and treat them with kindness is an extremely valuable experience that children can then easily transfer to their relationships with other humans; it helps with developing empathy, understanding and respect for both their peers and adults.
At St Joseph’s, we feel it is important that our pupils have this special opportunity to learn how to look after a pet and take responsibility for aspects of his care. 🐶
Humphrey, our much loved school dog, has been part of our school family for seven years. During this time, he has become an important source of comfort, motivation, and joy for pupils and staff alike. Having a dog in school brings a wide range of positive benefits, supporting both wellbeing and learning.
🌟 Emotional Wellbeing
Humphrey offers gentle companionship that helps pupils feel calmer, happier, and more settled throughout the school day.
🐾 Reduced Anxiety and Stress
Spending time with Humphrey can ease feelings of worry or overwhelm, providing reassurance for children who may be anxious or unsettled.
🐾 Improved Behaviour and Focus
Humphrey’s presence encourages pupils to make positive choices, show patience, and take responsibility. Many children find it easier to stay focused and engaged in lessons when he is nearby.
🐾 Confidence and Self‑Esteem
Interacting with Humphrey helps children grow in confidence, particularly those who may find social situations or emotional expression more challenging.
🐾 Social Skills and Empathy
Caring for Humphrey teaches pupils about kindness, empathy, and understanding the needs of others—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
🐾 A Positive School Environment
Humphrey helps create a warm, welcoming, and inclusive atmosphere where pupils feel safe, supported, and part of a caring community.
