Summer Term

Communication and Language (CL)

Role play plays a big part of our teaching and learning here at St. Joseph's nursery. We always have a home corner for the children to explore and that helps the children with their social communication.

We often read to the children and have a lovely book corner where we can play with puppets and read our favourite books. This term the children have enjoyed a home corner, cafe, vets, doctors and under the sea investigation centre!

Personal, Social and emotional (PSED)

It is really important for the children to be able to talk about home life at nursery. The children often bring in things from home for show and tell and talk about all the adventures they have had a home.

This term, we have made paper plate faces of our friends and painted pictures of our best friend at nursery.

We encourage choices and asserting the children's likes and dislikes - the children tried a variety of foods and let us know if they liked them or not by showing us a thumbs up or thumbs down!

Physical development

This term the children have loved their weekly  P.E sessions - working on hand - eye coordination, balancing, throwing and catching and kicking a football.

The children have been keen to climb on our new climbing structures both inside and outside.

We have made some fantastic dens this term - this encourages teamwork, lifting and carrying and problem solving.

We started tooth brushing this term! The children brush their teeth every day after lunch and we talk about the importance of oral hygiene.

Maths (M)

In maths this term we have had a different maths focus each week including shape, pattern, number and spatial awareness.

The children have explored the various tuff trays including: using tweezers to count coloured pompoms into coloured trays, finding the chalk shapes hidden on the playground, numicon patterns and maths puzzles.

Literacy (L)

The Oakleaves have been focusing on thinking about what happens next in a story and story sequencing the hungry caterpillar.

They have also been taking part in daily read, write, inc sessions and practicing writing their names and the set one sounds.

Understanding the world (UW)

We have been on lots of nature walks - listening out for sounds in the environment and looking our for the different signs of nature. We have also talked about how we look after our natural world and oceans.

Roy has been doing lots of gardening with the children - we planted lots of vegetables and looked after them all term.

Expressive arts and design

The children LOVE their weekly art sessions with Miss.Jenn! This term they have made soap sculptures, explored paint in a variety of ways and did some big art on the playground - swirling painted string and making footprints in paint,

The children have loved all their music sessions in the nursery and with little swallows. We have explored a range of musical instruments, sang songs and rhymes with the lycra cloth and dressed up in many different outfits in little swallows!
